What is the Role Play?

Each student will counsel in a fictional situation for three sessions using the principles learned in the Intro course.  The counselor will be given a PDI form before the session.  The first session will emphasize data gathering, hope building, and a preliminary approach to the problem.  Homework should be given.  The second session should emphasize more in depth instruction and application. The third session should seek to develop a plan for ongoing progress in the life of the counselee in the context of his local church.  Each session should last approximately 45 minutes.  After the “session” is over the class will discuss and critique the counselor’s approach.  The sessions will be videotaped.  “Counselees” should fill in a PDI before the 1st session. How to Prepare: Review your syllabus from the Intro course.  Remember the 7 “I”s.  Review The Christian Counselor’s Manual.  Feel free to bring aids you would like to have in a real counseling situation: ie, Homework Manuals, mini-guides/references (Helps for Counselors, by Jay Adams or Quick Scripture Reference for Counseling, by Kruis), tracts, etc.  Review the evaluation sheet in advance to know what the director will be looking for.  Between sessions do research so that you will come prepared. Schedule:  Date and times will be arranged between director, “counselor”, and “counselee.”  All observers are welcome. 

Why do the Role Play? 

Aside from being excellent counseling experience in a controlled environment, the Role Play is required if you are going to do the Tutorial (which is having IBCD supervise your 50 hours of observed counseling).  This is not at NANC requirement, but is an IBCD requirement if you want IBCD to supervise your 50 hours of supervised counseling for NANC certification (see also Tutorial and NANC Certification).

Prerequisite:

You should have completed the Introduction to Biblical Counseling course or its equivalent as well as your 10 hours of counseling observation.  All are welcome to attend and observe the Role Play Class.
